On a personal note – we love cats. We had so much fun visiting some lovelies at Crumbs & Whiskers – a one of a kind Coffee Shop and Cat Rescue in the heart of Washington D.C.

For those who don’t know, Crumbs & Whiskers, also known as “The Cat Cafe”, is a non-profit dedicated to rescuing cats of all breeds and ages, and finding them homes. There are two Crumbs & Whiskers locations – one in D.C. and one in Las Angeles. You can visit the cafe and enjoy coffee and cuddle with some playful and furry sweeties, and maybe you will even want to take one home. How could you not, right?
Why did we visit Crumbs & Whiskers? Because supporting our community and finding them homes is what we are all about, and these kitties need homes. Crumbs & Whiskers has saved 1,648 cats from euthanasia and found 747 cats a new home. There are more cats that need homes, and we support this mission.
Here are some reasons you may consider adopting one of these sweet kitties:

1) Cats are wonderful companions. It’s no news that animals make great pals, and reduce feelings of loneliness. Hence the popular adage, “Who saved who?” after people rescue animals. Cats require a different kind of attention than dogs. They can be affectionate, snuggly, and playful with their families, or just as happy to keep to themselves.
2) Cats are independent animals. Yes, you will have to take your new pet to the vet. You will have to put food out, and change the litter box. But, other than that, you can go out, have long days, and not have to worry about getting home to let them out or take them for a walk. They bathe themselves with no suds, candles or aromatherapy needed (shockingly low maintenance!) There are some pretty comical youtube videos people trying to water bathe their cats, though.

3) Adult cats are more mellow than kittens, and will likely adjust to your family, kids, and with other pets more easily. Usually, older cats have a little more savvy with children and other animals (even if it’s just knowing how to get away gracefully and quickly). There may be an adjustment period, but usually, the personality you experience when you first meet an adult cat, is the personality you will bring home with you.
4) Helping your local animal rescue efforts
There are so many cats in Washington D.C. alone, it would take 3 years to count them all! NPR reported recently, “PetSmart Charities, the Humane Society, the Humane Rescue Alliance and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute are collaborating on a project called the D.C. Cat Count, which aims to create a more accurate estimate of the city’s entire cat population — both feral cats and pet cats.” This will help determine an accurate number of cats that need homes in the district. Meanwhile, clearly, there are a lot who will be euthanized if we they do not find these cats a home.

5) Saving lives.
Seventy Percent (70%) of cats in shelters are euthanized, from an estimated 6-8 million cats and dogs that enter shelters every year. This is a staggering number from The U.S. Humane Society. We can help. You can help make safe homes for cats whose lives will be taken if we do not.
Join us in finding these cats a home. Please, share this blog with its relevant, local statistics and watch and share our upcoming videos featuring these adorable animals at Crumbs and Whiskers.
